Textile Testing Requirements for Global Retail Markets

A garment may look simple on a retail shelf, but before it reaches a global retailer it can pass through an extensive programme of chemical, physical, colourfastness, dimensional, performance and safety testing.

For international textile manufacturers, passing a laboratory test is therefore not merely a quality-control exercise. It can determine whether a shipment is accepted, rejected, reworked or prevented from entering a market altogether.

Major retailers, fashion brands and merchandisers increasingly operate their own testing protocols. These commonly combine ISO, AATCC, ASTM, EN and national standards with Restricted Substances Lists, regulatory requirements and retailer-specific performance limits.

The practical question is not simply: “Does this fabric meet a standard?” It is: “Which tests does this product need to pass for this buyer, this product category and this destination market?”

Colourfastness — One of the Most Common Retailer Test Groups

Colourfastness failures are among the most visible textile defects and can generate consumer complaints, returns and retailer claims.

Washing

ISO 105-C series and AATCC TM61 are commonly used to evaluate colour change and staining after laundering.

Crocking / Rubbing

ISO 105-X12 and AATCC TM8 evaluate dry and wet colour transfer through rubbing.

Perspiration

ISO 105-E04 and AATCC TM15 are particularly relevant for sportswear, activewear and garments in direct skin contact.

Lightfastness

ISO 105-B02 and AATCC TM16 series evaluate resistance to colour change caused by light exposure.

Dimensional Stability — Will the Garment Still Fit After Washing?

A garment can pass chemical and colourfastness testing and still become commercially unacceptable if its dimensions change significantly after laundering.

Defines domestic washing and drying procedures used for textile testing.

ISO 5077

Determines dimensional changes in textile products after washing and drying.

AATCC TM135

Evaluates dimensional changes of fabrics after home laundering.

AATCC TM150

Evaluates dimensional changes of garments after home laundering.

Shrinkage is not the only issue. Retailers may also evaluate growth, spirality, skew and overall appearance after laundering.

MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE

Fabric Strength & Mechanical Performance

Retailers need confidence that the garment will survive its expected use.

Tensile Strength

ISO 13934 series and ASTM D5034 / D5035 are commonly used to evaluate the force required to break textile fabrics.

Tear Strength

ISO 13937 series and ASTM D1424 evaluate resistance to tear propagation.

Bursting Strength

ISO 13938 series and ASTM D3786 / D3787 are particularly relevant to knitted and stretch fabrics.

Seam Strength

ISO 13935 series and ASTM D1683 evaluate the strength of sewn seams.

Seam Slippage

ISO 13936 series evaluates the tendency of yarns to move or separate near a seam.

Attachment Strength

Buttons, snaps, trims and decorative components may require pull-strength testing, especially for children’s garments.

Pilling, Abrasion & Surface Appearance

A garment does not need to physically break to become unacceptable. Surface deterioration can destroy perceived quality.

PILLING RESISTANCE ISO 12945 Series

Evaluates the formation of pills and surface fuzzing under defined mechanical conditions.

ABRASION RESISTANCE ISO 12947 / ASTM D4966

Evaluates resistance to surface wear under repeated rubbing or abrasion.

These tests are especially important for sportswear, trousers, upholstery, workwear, socks and outerwear.

Appearance After Laundering

Global retailers increasingly evaluate the product as the consumer experiences it — not merely as laboratory material.

Relevant AATCC methods can include TM88B for seam smoothness, TM88C for crease retention, TM124 for fabric appearance after home laundering and TM128 for wrinkle recovery.

CHEMICAL & RSL TESTING

Chemical Testing — The Retailer RSL Has Become Central

For global merchandisers, chemical compliance is now one of the most important areas of textile testing.

Retailers frequently maintain their own Restricted Substances Lists, which may incorporate regulatory requirements and often impose stricter limits than minimum legislation.

The chemical testing programme must address both the destination market and the buyer’s own RSL. Legal compliance alone does not guarantee retailer acceptance.

OEKO-TEX

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 — A Global Product-Safety Benchmark

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 has become one of the most internationally recognizable textile product-safety certification systems.

The certification evaluates textile products and their components against requirements covering a broad range of harmful substances.

Product Class I

Products for babies and children up to three years, subject to particularly strict requirements.

Product Class II

Products intended for direct skin contact.

Product Class III

Products without direct skin contact.

Product Class IV

Home textiles and decorative materials.

Does OEKO-TEX certification replace retailer testing?

Not necessarily. A global merchandiser may still require its own chemical RSL testing, physical-performance testing and buyer-specific acceptance criteria.

Children’s Clothing & Product Safety

Children’s apparel is normally subjected to more demanding product-safety assessment.

Age grading becomes particularly important because a component that is acceptable on an adult garment may create a hazard on a product intended for a small child.

Flammability Testing

Flammability requirements vary substantially according to product category and destination market.

U.S. flammability requirements applicable to clothing textiles.

16 CFR Parts 1615 / 1616

U.S. flammability requirements for children’s sleepwear.

ISO 15025

Evaluates limited flame spread characteristics of materials used in protective clothing.

EN ISO 6941

Measures flame propagation properties of vertically oriented textile specimens.

“Flammability tested” is not a sufficient specification. The applicable test method depends on the product category, intended use and destination market.

One Product Can Have Three Different Layers of Requirements

Retailer-specific performance limits covering shrinkage, colourfastness, pilling, strength, appearance, workmanship and chemical substances.

Layer 3 — Product Claims

Additional testing may be required where a garment is marketed as waterproof, antibacterial, quick-drying, UV-protective, moisture-wicking or otherwise performance-enhanced.

A product can be legally compliant and still fail the buyer’s test protocol. Regulatory conformity and retailer acceptance are related, but they are not the same thing.

Testing context: Textile testing requirements vary according to product category, fibre composition, intended use, age group, destination market, retailer specification and performance claims. ISO, AATCC, ASTM and EN methods provide internationally recognized testing frameworks, while legal chemical restrictions, flammability requirements, buyer RSLs and retailer-specific acceptance criteria may apply separately.
